England v Belgium: Player Ratings

A much-changed England side finished the group stage with a 1-0 defeat to Belgium to finish second in Group G. Here are my player ratings…

Jordan Pickford – This was the first time he has had much to do in an England shirt and he failed to convince. He had to be bailed out by Cahill after spilling the ball in the first half, and didn’t deal convincingly with a couple of long-range strikes either. 5/10

Phil Jones – The reserve centre-back will likely remain just that after an unconvincing display in which he struggled at times when Belgium’s attack gathered pace. 6/10

John Stones – The standout player at the back in his time on the pitch, looking more assured defensively with every game for England. He came off at the break and will hopefully be ready to play a crucial role in the knockout rounds. 7/10

Gary Cahill – He saved England in the first half was a clearance off the line after Pickford’s spill, and was England biggest set-piece threat as well. Didn’t make any errors, and may be chosen ahead of Maguire against bigger sides if we meet them. 7/10

Trent Alexander-Arnold – England’s best player at right wing-back, providing one of the strongest attacking threats while proving difficult to beat in defence. He also showed confidence in taking some of the set pieces, but he’s unfortunate to have Kieran Trippier in such good for ahead of him. 8/10

Ruben Loftus-Cheek – Didn’t have much of an impact in the first half but got forward more in the second, although neither wide midfielder broke forward as much as in the previous games. 6/10

Eric Dier – England’s stand-in captain looked off the pace at times, giving away possession cheaply a number of times and failing to play the team forward either. He was often overrun by the Belgian midfield and won’t be threatening Jordan Henderson’s position in the side. 5/10

Fabian Delph – He doesn’t give the ball away but he doesn’t do much with it either. Likely to be used as a secure option off the bench to see out a game in later rounds. 6/10

Danny Rose – Struggled a little in defence with the free-roaming Adnan Januzaj choosing to pick on him frequently, most notably for the winning goal. He did offer some threat going forward but will remain behind Ashley Young in the pecking order. 5/10

Jamie Vardy – Looked lovely in attack in chasing down the defence, and he was a threat in the box but never got the kind of service he needs. 6/10

Marcus Rashford – Saw little of the ball in the first half but then failed to convert two good chances in the second half. He made some promising runs but may have missed the opportunity to edge ahead of Raheem Sterling. 5/10

Harry Maguire – The half-time substitute was solid and didn’t take too many risks. 6/10

Danny Welbeck – Came on with ten minutes to go and had a couple of good chances, with one blocked and the other mishit from a quick free-kick. 6/10
